The position is tenable in Nairobi at the icipe Duduville campus. The position is for an initial fixed-term of 2 years, renewable, based on performance and availability of funds. Overall purpose of the job The position offers a unique opportunity to work in the sphere of international development and make one’s mark in Research and Development. The Technology Transfer Unit Head interacts with and represents icipe in various fora, working with small-scale farmers, the private sector, government agencies, and international experts and scientists in the field. Responsibilities The Junior Communications Officer will work with the TTU Head and staff, and will be responsible for the following activities: Communication strategy With the Head of TTU, build, design, and implement both annual and long-term communication strategies for the Unit. Internal communication coordination Ensure smooth internal communication within the various sections of icipe. External communication and social media Coordinate and assist with the writing, design and wide distribution of TTU publications and products (such as reports, newsletters and country profiles). Regularly update social media and identify ways to keep users interested and engaged (blog, stories, focus on specific activities, etc.). Public relations Support the public relations function, build a database of potential audiences, distribute media requests to partners, and respond to users. VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT (Ref. No. NRS/210/072017) JUNIOR COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER, TTU Content management Coordinate the CMS and manage the web interface content (e.g. infographics descriptions, FAQs, etc.), actualise TTU communication products, and upload relevant publications according to criteria agreed with partners in the communication strategy. Liaising with web developers Liaise with the icipe Communications Unit, to ensure that the structure adequately responds to icipe’s principles of communication branding (web interface space for social media, communication products, publications). Editorial tasks Ensure that the TTU’s web interface and its communication and other products are of high quality and are user-friendly, by providing editing and proofreading support. Branding Build a brand for TTU, while taking into account icipe’s brand image. Development of performance indicators Provide regular updates and statistics on the number of views and comments. Compile quarterly user statistics (visits, clicks, downloads, citations), communicate trends to partners, and adapt communication activities on the basis of the analysis. Keep track of ‘media echo’ around the TTU, and provide an annual overview thereof. Requirements/Qualifications § Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or other relevant discipline. § Two years’ experience in communications, journalism or relevant field. § Experience with Content Management Systems (CMS) applications or software. § Knowledge of graphic design software; video, audio and photo editing software; web design tools; and graphics optimisation for web design. Core Competencies § Demonstrated understanding of issues related to research and development (R&D). § Competent in designing and formatting a diverse range of communication products. § English writing and editing skills. § Social media skills: Ability to navigate the online social sphere as the voice of the Unit. § Experience with open data/open source initiatives. § Linguistic proficiency: Although English is the primary language, the ability to work in a local language such as Swahili, Kikuyu, Luo, Kamba, or Luhya, and in French is a plus. Other desirable attributes § Excellent interpersonal skills. Reporting This position reports to the Head, Technology Transfer Unit.
