ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Middle East Children’s Institute (MECI) seeks to empower vulnerable and underserved individuals living in our community by enabling them to live more independent, and productive lives.

MECI uses a holistic, child-centered approach to provide learning support services to out-of-school and vulnerable children. We focus on vulnerable Jordanian and Syrian refugee populations. We complement our academic programming with arts, physical activity and Life Skills courses as well as child protection services. In doing so, we aim to serve our beneficiaries as whole people, acknowledging the difficulties they have endured and preparing them for opportunities ahead.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Youth & Engagement Specialist will ensure the efficacy and success of MECI’s life skills and community engagement activities in Jordan. The main tasks and responsibilities of the position include:

o Conduct an assessment of MECI’s practices in youth programming, including an assessment of strengths and weaknesses compared with current sector best practices and assessed local needs, and suggestions for formulating a youth strategy to guide and enhance current and future programming

o Create and coordinate implementation of a locally relevant comprehensive youth outreach methodology in order to build awareness of project activities and encourage participation across targeted regions

o Coordinate and support the planning, provision and reporting/evaluation of life skills trainings for the youth. At time, direct training provision may be requested.

o Plan, coordinate and support the implementation as well as reporting/evaluation of youth-led community engagement initiatives, taking into consideration local challenges and opportunities and actively mentoring youth to be civically engaged

o Establish and maintain an efficient and branded youth network of MECI Youth Life Skills trainees/graduates to ensure follow-up of past trainees, active referrals to other existing youth network (Jeel962), liaison for post-training engagement/education/employment opportunities, and mobilization needs within MECI’s programs and beyond at community level. This includes post-secondary/tertiary/scholarship awareness, information sharing along with counseling and profile/offer matching

o Provide capacity-building opportunities along with continuous technical support through observations to MECI’s Life Skills facilitators for children aged 6-12 and Life Skills Trainers for adolescents/youth aged 13-25

o Liaise with MECI’s Psychosocial Support and Child Protection Specialist in charge of psychosocial observations in order to define performance indicators on which to base observations

o With the support of IM teams, train program staff on monitoring and evaluation tools for youth programs, including M&E framework, baseline and end of program surveys, and other engagement and networking tools

o Periodically revise (upon management request and in support of IM teams) MECI’s approach to youth, engagement and life skills programming and the methodology at use in an effort to benefit both Jordanian beneficiaries and trauma-affected refugee children, this includes MECI’s life skills curriculum for children, activities framework and wellbeing, behavioral and resilience assessments

o In coordination with the Field Officer and/or other Specialists, support the design and implementation of other PSS-related program activities such as: school life initiatives, social cohesion events, community workshops and awareness sessions, field/experimental trips…etc.

o Ensure participation from beneficiaries in program development, implementation, and evaluation and feedback mechanisms for accountability

o When relevant, participate in youth development coordination meetings/working groups and report on their content and development for knowledge sharing on best practices and lessons learned

o Provide monthly work plans to management along with weekly internal reports displaying past week achievements and upcoming tasks and objectives

o Maintain program files and documentation as per program management minimum standards, including maintaining the confidentiality of beneficiaries’ data

o Complete additional administrative and operational tasks as determined by MECI management

QUALIFICATIONS

o Degree in Psychology, Psychosocial, Social Sciences or any related field

o A minimum of 6+ years experience in youth, child protection, psychosocial support and capacity building

o Experience of training and technical supervision in field of Youth Engagement and Psychosocial support with NGOs, preferably in emergency context

o Experience in assisting youth groups to design and implement youth-led community engagement activities

o Certified ToT of UNICEF’s Youth Life Skills and IRC’s Life Skills Adolescents Curriculum Training Modules

o Professional working proficiency in English and fluency in Arabic, both written and verbal (NO EXCEPTIONS).

o Proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office programs

DESIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

o Strong understanding of the principles of Positive Youth Development (PYD)

o Experience in advisory, capacity building roles, including international development, ideally in education and youth development programs

o Experience with direct service provision to youth

o Demonstrated understanding of youth-related challenges and opportunities in Jordan, and passion for youth empowerment, engagement and improvement of livelihoods. Deep appreciation for youth energy, leadership and entrepreneurial spirit

o An understanding of the Jordanian local context, culture, opportunities and challenges at community-level, and in light of the Syrian refugee crisis

o Good knowledge and understanding of humanitarian principles, Protection frameworks and tools, and Protection minimum standards

o Proven record as a team player

o Distinct inspirational characteristics, personality and mentoring skills

o Strong personal organizational skills Demonstrated commitment to result-oriented performances

This is a temporary 12-month contract with a local salary. The position may be extended based on performance and availability of funding. Please note that the selected candidate must be able to start potentially in March/April 2018.
